Executive protection services, also popularly known as close protection services is nothing but the cumulative set of security measures that is taken to ensure the safety of any VIPS, celebrities and any other high profile person who because of their status, wealth, etc. is vulnerable to the personal risk of their lives and property. Started by the US Secret Service sometime in the 1970s, it has evolved into a specialist protection services today.

Executive Protection-Mitigating Risk

It just takes one bad incident to fully realize the difference between the bodyguard services and personal protection teams. A bodyguard might just have an NFL physique and look imposing while opening your car door but executive protection expands beyond it and includes risk assessment, advance planning and execution and plenty of legwork to ensure that any risk is mitigated to maximum, and everything proceeds smoothly and according to plan.

The assessment of risk is affected by a number of details, many of which are industry secrets. However, there are three attributes which define and demarcates them from the normal bodyguards. They are:

  • Specific threats

Specific threats to any VIP person and his family from varied sources and ‘persons of interest’ need to be perceived and analyzed much in advance to keep the person safe. It is a well-known fact that those that constitute the biggest threat are never amongst those that make the direct threats. For execution protection specialist, it means that assessing risk need to expand beyond recording the actual threats. It also covers proactive intelligence to surmise and identify not only possible but also probable threats from persons and groups of interest.

  • Traffic

Even through risk is omnipresent today; some countries and places are perceived to have a higher risk than others. For instance, a jeweler who is traveling to Caracas is at higher risk than the jeweler traveling to Chicago. However, none can argue the fact that the biggest risk while traveling is the probability of meeting a serious road accident and getting seriously hurt. Executive protection services are well aware of it and thus offer a very important component of secure transportation via both specialized vehicles as well as specialized drivers.

  • Prominence

The third identifying factor of risk probability is prominence. The more prominent the target person is, the more is the risk of his falling under the radar of ‘persons of interest’. This interaction can vary from slight to aggressive invasions of privacy. They many come forth as largely innocuous or manifest incredible hostility. It can be as simple as overzealous fans or come from much higher risk source like the terrorist groups.

Duties of the protection professionals

A trained executive protection professional provides service around the clock, day and night. They keep watch over their clients and scrutinize the surroundings minutely to monitor every single happening near them. They typically tend to dress low profile so that they are not easily identifiable and can easily blend in the environment to prevent anybody from identifying them. While most bodyguards would not be aware of terms like Threat Assessment, Route Reconnaissance, Advance Tactics, Area Surveillance, Embus and Debus plans, Movement Safety, etc. Unlike bodyguards, they depend on physical deterrence. They do not wait for the risk to drop on their faces but take steps such that the risk cannot come onto them. They create an environment such that even in the largest of crowds no person tries to make any stupid or foolish move. Despite most countries bracketing them in the same bracket like the Security Guards or Private Investigation, they are a class distinctly apart from them. They have to undergo an intensive and aggressive training which is almost army like before they get certified to be employed for protection services. Apart from specialization in the use of muscles as well as armaments, they are also trained to be on constant brain alert and analyze and face every situation in an intelligent and courageous way.
