The present school system is increasingly focusing on the all-round development of a child. While this is an excellent direction, it also means that there is a shift away from curricular work. This has resulted in the further importance of tuition classes specially in subjects such as Maths.
In this changed environment, the role of the parent is increasingly more important. Tuition classes have traditionally used the drill and practice approach to make sure that students perform better in tests and exams.
There has also been some shift in emphasis on the way students are being taught in schools due to the increased importance of career-based studies now. Students have now realized that just memorizing lessons without knowing how they are to be applied is not very useful. Such learning acts as a barrier in passing the entrance exams, which students face immediately after their 12th board exams.
Beyond a certain level, all parents may not be able to help their children with curricular work. This is specially true for subjects such as Maths. But there are a number of things that you as a parent can do to help your child learn better and perform better. Here are 6 simple rules to follow:
1. Stay connected with your child. Ask how things are going, what is being taught, where there are challenges. The support this provides to a child is significant and boosts their confidence while reducing pressure.
2. Ask them to demonstrate their learning / understanding. This is more effective in the lower classes and again helps build confidence while actually revising concepts and getting your child to think about applications.
3. Find the right tuition environment. Look for tutors or classes where the class size is small. Having 20 kids together is not conducive to individual attention. Ask for referrals and then talk to other parents. Ask to understand the teaching approach and how individual attention is provided.
4. Connect with the teaching environment. If you are in regular touch with the teachers in school as well as the tuition teacher, you will achieve two things. The first is that your child will be noticed and hence given some additional attention in class. The second is that you will be aware of any changes that happen in performance very early.
5. Provide a disciplined learning environment at home. Ensure that certain times are strictly adhered to. Once a child gets used to a study routine, their overall stress reduces and regular study enhances their marks.
6. Use the online environment. There are many free resources on the net. These provide interesting ways of learning a subject as well as interesting worksheets. However children will not instinctively turn to the web for learning and this will need your active involvement and encouragement.

Recently we came across a child taking Maths tuition in Delhi who has been taking Maths tuitions since the first grade. She has changed tutors every 6 months and her marks have not improved. She has now reached a point where she hates Maths and will do anything possible to avoid it. A brief conversation showed that she is an intelligent child with quick grasping abilities. She could quickly relate to basic Maths concepts. Unfortunately, not one of her teachers or tutors were able to interest her in the subject and give her enough encouragement. This is more common than we think.
