How does it function?

While it is true that the basic functioning of an air cooled chiller is based on air, it would be wrong to assume that there is no role played by water in the cooling process. However, unlike the traditional refrigeration system, the function of the water is not to be absorbing the excess heat. In fact, the need for water in an air cooled chiller is to chill the air rather than take away its heat. The integral system needs an evaporator with a refrigerant in liquid state. There are water filled tubes which surround the substance to be cooled. The increase in pressure by the compressor brings about the formation of a condensing type vapour which is directed back to the evaporator.

The main process of cooling begins within the evaporator itself where the refrigerant is spread out on to the water filled tubes, thus cooling them. The area to be cooled is surrounded by these tubes. The chilled water then brings the temperature down further. In this process, the water does get heated and when it reaches a specific temperature, the heat is transferred back to the evaporator where the heated water is vaporised by the refrigerant.

The vapour is now passed through pipes with lesser volume thus increasing the resultant pressure. The condenser is then put into motion which has a function similar to that of a car radiator. The vapour condenses back into its liquid state while the heat is let off into the air. This liquid is now sent back to the evaporator and the whole process begins all over again.
