Car pooling is the process of sharing an employee's car by going in pairs with another colleague who travels the same way to work and sharing the fuel costs between them with some even choosing to share the car itself.
Not only will your wallet feel lighter after sharing your car, but you can rest your head on the pillow at night knowing you did something good and know that you've been an eco-friendly citizen - now is the time to organise your car pooling system!
Governments and councils sometimes offer initiatives to car poolers as they may lend you a private car so that you can get easily to and from your offices and ease up the demand on local transport from commuters. You may not have a fellow passenger for the whole trip if you don't have to pick your car pooler friend up until part-way through which means that some drivers may hardly notice the detour - everybody has something to gain from giving it a go!
Other ways to get involved with car pooling include browsing specially dedicated car pooling websites which is free to use and could turn out a match instantly without the hassle of going through newspapers. If the staff at your workplace want to give it a go it could be of help to talk to your managers who might be able to supply funding or incentives thus making it easy to get your car pooling idea off the ground.
When getting your car share going you'll have to work out what way you will go to work and what route will cover both parties adequately so you're not driving unreasonable amounts more. After all, the whole point of car sharing is to save fuel so be sure to choose the shortest route available and check the right roads to take before you set off confirming the exact point of pickup with your colleague.
If you get bitten by the car sharing bug and want to do more and you travel relatively far on your way to work you may wish to search for locals who aren't necessarily colleagues and they would pay only for the distance they have covered. Don't forget to approach car sharing with safety in mind and you must be aware when you are inviting strangers to share your car - why not get a friend, relative or colleague to come with you when you meet any new car pooling buddies for the first time.
When relocating our office a few years ago to a Canary Wharf office senior management decided to initiate a company-wide scheme of car pooling to ensure that colleagues weren't affected by the new commute. Colleagues that embraced the initiative were able to put aside money that, otherwise, would have gone on transport such as buses or taxis had the car sharing idea not been brought in - enabling colleagues to mix outside of work.
So if you want to do your bit for Mother Nature and you'd like to cut down your rising petrol bills as well as sharing a ride with a fellow colleague car pooling is undoubtedly the best way forward!
