One of the most exciting changes which we have seen in the world in the last few years is the freedom which we now have to work and live abroad.
Whether you are planning to retire to Spain, work in a bar in Greece or open a hotel in Italy, the legal issues in moving abroad with the European Union are now a lot simpler than ever before,. Just buying a ticket and hopping across to the place you want to make your new home is a feasible option now.
This doesn’t mean that there is no preparation needing to be done before your big move, and here we will look at a few things which are worth doing beforehand.

  1. Adapt to the climate. It is unlikely that you will be going somewhere with exactly the same climate as your home town, so sorting out some new clothes and anything like sun cream or mosquito repellent is a good thing to get cleared up before you take your flight.
  2. Find your way about. You will probably find that an online service like Google Maps is now the best way to explore your new home town. No doubt you will be happy to find a few surprises when you get there, but having an idea of where are you are going to be staying is in relation to airport and train stations is something which will help you get settled in on your first day.
  3. Sort out a job and somewhere to stay. Just turning up in a foreign country and starting a new life on the hoof is a wonderful thought but if money is tight then it makes sense to plan ahead and search the web for somewhere to stay and to try and fix up a few job interviews.
  4. Find a way to stay in touch. You will probably be keen to send some messages back home during your first few days, to let people know that you have arrived safely and  to sort out anything which needs done as quickly as possible. There are loads of ways of doing this these days using video chat like Skype, emails, SMS or any one of a number of other ways.
  5. Learn the language. It is a good idea to be able to say at least the basics before you arrive. Picking up some grammar and a decent vocabulary shouldn’t be too difficult if you are motivated by the move. This can be done in a number of ways as well. For example, for Spanish and Portuguese lessons Leeds, Coventry, Edinburgh and just about everywhere else in the country offers courses, while for German lessons London and the other big cities are no longer the only places to check out.
